Garden for Relaxation, West Finchley, London

The owners of this small suburban garden in North London were keen to reclaim their outside space and transform it from playground to peaceful oasis.

There were several challenges involved in turning this well used family garden into an inviting living space, including an austere garage wall to one side and the view of neighbouring properties to the other. The far end of the garden was also shady and uninviting, despite its south-west facing aspect, due to the location of two large, deciduous trees.

The solution was to centrally site a simple wooden pergola to create a cosy, private seating area that the whole family could enjoy. Festooned with vintage style lamps, the structure helps screen the view from, and of, the neighbouring houses without compromising the light. Climbing plants with varying seasons of interest were also added to provide additional privacy and softness.

Leading to the pergola, a staggered porcelain pathway has been designed to slow down the pace whilst enticing the family out into the garden. A functional feature has been made out of the imposing garage wall by painting it black and mounting back-lit, decorative, corten steel panels and tensioned wires to support evergreen jasmine.

Opposite the feature wall, the sunny gravel garden makes an ideal place to sit back and relax with a book amidst airy, pollinator friendly plants and ornamental grasses that add height and movement to the scheme.
